HGSRC Juniors – The Home of Champions – Buckinghamshire County Junior Closed Championship 2015
Once again Holmer Green were well represented in the Bucks Junior County Closed held at Wycombe Squash Club 26-27 September 2015– a testament to the thriving junior section at the club and to all the coaches, parents and helpers who contribute week after week in bringing through the next generation of players at the club.
HGSRC didn’t have an entry in the Boys or Girls Under 19 section, but the players in the younger age groups did themselves proud.
In the Boys U17 14 year old Will Smith was the #4 seed and displayed skill, maturity and focus to overcome the #1 seed in the semi finals in what was probably the match of the tournament - coming back from 1-2 down and finally winning a fantastic match 11-6 | 7-11 | 8-11 | 11-3 | 12-10. Will followed that up with a 11-7 | 11-6 | 6-11 | 11-6 win over the #3 seed in the final just a few hours later. Congratulations to Matthew Holland, Sunil Popat, James Holland and Max Cherrett who occupied the number 8 to 11 spots.
In the Boys U15 the club had the #1 seed Jasper Kettle who displayed his improving performance level in reaching the finals without dropping a game, beating HGSRC’s #5 seed Matt O’Regan in the semi finals. In the final Jasper met another HGSRC player, the #3 seed Matty Gallagher who had a very impressive 3-0 victory over the #2 seed in the semi finals. Jasper won the first two closely contested games before Matty put everything into edging a tight 3rd game. In the fourth game Matty’s previous efforts caught up with him and Jasper’s control saw him take the game and the title. Matt O’Regan took #4 place after beating the #5 seed in a hard fought 2nd round match, Alex O’Regan finished #11 after just losing a close 3rd round match, and Dominic Holland #15 after having been on the wrong end of some very close results in the earlier rounds. A great effort from everyone to come out with three of the top four places.
In the Boys U13 Konrad Pompe was the #6 seed and won his first two rounds convincingly, and then won his third round match in the 5th game against the #7 seed to guarantee at least 6th place. Despite giving his all in his last match Konrad couldn’t quite swing things his way against the 5th seed but remains a strong player for the coming season.
In the girls U15 Alysha Martin was #4 seed and won a close game against the #5 seed, put up a good fight against the #1 seed and nearly beat the #3 seed, eventually ending up in 4th position. Lucy Herrity was seeded 9th and did well to beat the #8 seed in her first match and came close to beating the #7 seed in her last match, ending up in 8th place.
It was a pleasure to watch all of our juniors give a good account of themselves, they played to a high level and their attitude was fantastic. As always I think the parents and everyone supporting them were more nervous than the players themselves.
